
on the 20th of October, 2024, De Marillac Children attended a Webinar organized by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the UN on Violence Against Children. During the event, we were able to dialogue with experts, representatives of the UN, and Children around the UN assembly, we’re given the platform to share our experiences, and the kinds of violence perpetrated against Children in our region and also suggest possible interventions from the UN.
Some Violence carried out against Children
Some of these actions were identified as the common violence perpetrated against Children
1. Physical Abuse: Involves the use of force that results in bodily injury or pain, such as hitting, kicking, or shaking a child.
2. Emotional Abuse: Consists of behaviors that harm a child’s self-worth or emotional well-being, including verbal insults, constant criticism, or rejection.
3. Sexual Abuse: Any sexual activity with a child, including exploitation, harassment, or coercion, which can have long-lasting psychological effects.
4. Neglect: Occurs when a caregiver fails to provide necessary care, including food, shelter, clothing, education, and medical attention.
5. Child Labor: Refers to the exploitation of children in work that is harmful to their physical or mental development and deprives them of their childhood.
6. Bullying: Involves repeated aggressive behavior, either physical, verbal, or relational, aimed at intimidating or harming another child.
7. Human Trafficking: Involves the illegal transportation and exploitation of children for labor or sexual purposes, often under coercion.
8. Domestic Violence: Children are exposed to violence within their homes, which can create an unsafe and traumatic environment for them.
9. Psychological Abuse: Includes manipulative behaviors, such as gaslighting or controlling, that lead to emotional distress and undermine a child’s confidence.
The webinar not only introduced us to new ideas and opportunities but also acted as a bridge, fostering an environment that supports our mission to protect and empower children in our community.
