Street children often endure unimaginable hardships, facing a reality where the streets become their playgrounds, shelters, and often their only source of survival. The condition of street children is a stark reflection of societal neglect, economic disparity, and systemic failure. Here are some of the Challenges faced by street children:
LACK OF BASIC NEEDS: Street children frequently lack access to basic necessities such as food, clean water, shelter, and clothing. Without a stable home or family support, they scavenge through trash bins or resort to begging to fulfill their daily needs.
HEALTH RISK: Living on the streets exposes children to various health hazards. They are more susceptible to malnutrition, infectious diseases, and injuries from accidents or violence. Without access to proper healthcare, even minor illnesses can escalate into life-threatening conditions.
EXPLOITATION AND ABUSE: Street children are vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, including physical, emotional, and sexual violence. They may fall prey to human traffickers, be forced into child labor, or be coerced into criminal activities such as theft or drug trafficking by manipulative adults.
LACK OF EDUCATION: Education is often a distant dream for street children. Without access to schools or the means to afford education, they miss out on opportunities for personal development and a better future.
PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMA: The harsh realities of street life can inflict severe psychological trauma on children. Constant exposure to violence, rejection, and uncertainty can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Many street children struggle with feelings of loneliness, hopelessness, and abandonment.

SOCIAL STIGMA AND DISCRIMINATION: Street children face pervasive social stigma and discrimination, often viewed as societal nuisances or criminals rather than victims of circumstance. This stigma further marginalizes them, making it difficult to access support services or reintegrate into mainstream society.
In our usual culture to mark this year’s INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR CHILDREN IN STREET SITUATION, De Marillac Centre went to different streets of Port Harcourt to feed Children living on the street, to sensitize them against the dangers involved in living on the street and how they can be liberated from the street situation.
